Here are a couple designs I'm working on for the Scare Crow.
I thought of this character as being a little off up stairs, not an evil "nuts" but definitely nuts. I wanted to push what might be done with the hay or corn husks that the Scare Crow is made from, so I explored looping and weaving these materials together to get a new look. Something nice that came from that was it allowed for secondary action when he's moving, which helps sell that nutty personality. It also really opened the door for the different shapes and silhouettes I could explore with his head.
I also imagined the clothes he wears would be worn to the bone, with tons of patches, like the family that made him tried to used those clothes as much as they could before putting them on the Scare Crow. I also thought it would be fun if the Scare Crow hadn't gotten off his wooden cross easily, again he's a nutty character so in one drawing he still has the cross on his back and in the other it's splintered but still attached to his wrists.
Like on the Tin Man, being able to look into him and see he has no heart is an approach I want to do with the Scare Crow as well. So you'll see that he has ties on his head, this is so sometime in the story he can untie those and we will actually see he has no brain in there. This also lets me create the open version of his head, and all the shapes that can be.
Again any crits or comments are greatly welcomed, and a big thanks to every one who has already left comments on this and other pieces!

Great work Dela. The shapes are pushed together well. By the way, thanks for the heads up on posting. I will post soon.
I came upon your blog while surfing a myriad of others. I was pleasantly surprised to find one that stood out among the many others. Great work! I absolutely love your character designs -- very impressive. And your pencil work is gorgeous! May I have your permission to post a link of your blog on mine?

Cheers!
my my my..that's a great scarecrow! love you work. wouldn't be good to see a full illustration with all the characters together?
Hi!
What an inpiration your work is!
I am from Athens, Greece.
Parallel to my product design (check out our website:www.vastdesign.gr), my interests also lie in drawing and painting and at the same time, since college, I have an extremely soft spot for imaginative worlds, alternate reallities, stories e.t.c.
However, since there is no entertainment industry here in Greece, that I can
work for, I do not know how to proceed.
I have had thoughts of developing stories, illustrating them and then
getting my art in galleries. Another thought was to publish my illustrated
stories (not in comic book form) in books, layed out and designed by myself.
I have seen your work as well as Christian Schellewald's and Luc
Desmarchelier's work as well as the work in the book 'In the future...'
which shows Art Center entertainment design work, and I can honestly say
that that kind of 'visual development' art is what interests me the most.
Any thoughts?
